A Gift With Purchase (GWP) campaign is one of the few promotional mechanics that lifts AOV without touching the price the shopper sees on the product. You’re not discounting; you’re adding. Done right, GWP campaigns lift AOV 18-30% and protect brand positioning in a way that “20% off everything” never can. Done wrong, they’re a margin sieve attached to free samples shoppers don’t actually want.

This guide covers the 11 GWP campaign types worth running on Shopify, the threshold math behind each, and the implementation patterns that don’t break on mobile or in checkout.

Why GWP outperforms percentage-off discounts

Three reasons:

1. It anchors on a product, not a discount. A 20%-off sale teaches shoppers your products are worth 20% less. A free gift teaches them they get more by buying now. The first erodes the brand; the second reinforces it.

2. The perceived value of the gift exceeds its COGS. A $30-retail gift might cost you $7 in COGS. The shopper sees a $30 thing they’re getting free; you spend $7 to get the lift.

3. It pairs cleanly with a free shipping threshold. Stacking GWP on top of free shipping creates a multi-tier rewards bar that compounds. See the tiered rewards bar guide for the full pattern.

The 11 GWP campaign types

1. Threshold-unlock GWP (“spend $X, get Y free”)

The default. Set a threshold 25-40% above current AOV. Shoppers add items to cross the threshold and unlock the gift. Lift: 15-25% AOV.

Use this if you have one or two clear hero gifts you can run consistently. The hero needs perceived value of at least 1.5x the gap it’s closing — a $30-perceived gift to close a $20 AOV gap, not a $5 sticker.

2. BOGO GWP (“buy one, get one free”)

Mostly a clearance mechanic. Lifts unit volume but cannibalizes margin. Use it for end-of-season inventory or to seed trial of a new variant. Don’t run it as an evergreen offer.

3. Free sample GWP

Add a sachet, mini-size, or trial of a different product in your line. Best used to drive trial of a new SKU you want to scale. The mechanic is cheap (samples are pennies) and the cross-sell-into-full-size rate is 8-15% within 60 days.

4. Mystery gift GWP

The shopper unlocks “a free gift” without knowing exactly what. Adds a curiosity element that lifts open rates on email and conversion in cart. Works best when the mystery pool has 3-5 items at similar perceived value.

Trade-off: post-purchase reviews can be mixed if the gift varies wildly in desirability. Make sure the worst item in the pool is still something most customers would want.

5. Tiered gifts (“$50 → small gift, $100 → bigger gift, $150 → biggest gift”)

The compounding version of #1. Each tier unlocks a better gift, so the goal-gradient effect persists past the first threshold. AOV lift: 22-32% when stacked correctly.

Cartylabs supports this natively as part of the stacked rewards bar. Most other apps cap at one threshold.

6. Choose-your-gift GWP

The shopper picks one gift from 2-4 options at the threshold. Higher engagement than a fixed gift, slightly higher fulfillment complexity. Conversion uplift over a single fixed gift: 3-6%.

7. Spend-to-upgrade GWP

Spend $X, get a better version of something already in the cart. Best for haircare, skincare, supplements where size upgrades are clear (5oz → 10oz). Margin-light because the upgrade SKU is similar COGS.

8. Gift-with-subscription

The gift unlocks only on a subscription order. Most efficient mechanic for shifting one-time buyers to subscribers. LTV uplift dwarfs the gift COGS.

9. Gift-with-second-order

The first order earns a credit; the second order unlocks the gift. Drives repeat purchase rate. See the retention playbook for how this fits a wider repeat-purchase strategy.

10. Gift-with-referral

The gift unlocks when a referred friend places their first order. Combines GWP with a referral mechanic. CAC-positive on most catalogs.

11. Limited-time mystery GWP

A 48-hour window where every order over $X gets a surprise gift. Used during launches, BFCM, and seasonal pushes. Drives urgency and lifts conversion 10-15% during the window.

GWP threshold math

The same formula as a free shipping bar, with an adjustment for gift COGS:

Threshold = AOV × 1.30 + (gift COGS × 3)

The third multiplier on gift COGS accounts for two effects: the share of orders that would have been placed above threshold anyway (so the gift is pure margin loss), and the share of returns/refunds where you don’t claw the gift back.

Worked example. AOV $58, gift COGS $7:

  • Threshold = $58 × 1.30 + ($7 × 3) = $75.40 + $21 = $96.40 → round to $99

For tiered gifts, calculate each tier independently against its specific gift COGS.

What the gift should be

Three rules:

The gift has to have visible retail value. A “free $5 sample” is not a gift. A “free 5oz hand cream, $24 retail” is. Always show the retail value next to the gift.

The gift cannot cannibalize a top-10 SKU. If your full-size hand cream is your bestseller, giving it away free in any volume kills the core revenue stream. Pick a complementary SKU or a smaller size.

The gift inventory has to last the campaign. Running out of GWP inventory mid-campaign creates a customer service mess. Stock for 130-150% of forecast volume.

Mobile implementation rules

The cart drawer is the primary surface. Three patterns:

  • Show the unlocked gift as a line item with a $0.00 price. Shoppers want to see it land in the cart, not infer it.
  • Animate the unlock moment. A small confetti or pulse when the threshold crosses lifts perceived value of the gift.
  • Show “you’ve unlocked the gift” as a separate banner. Don’t bury it inside the threshold bar.

For the cart drawer UX that wraps the GWP, see the cart drawer guide.

A 7-step launch playbook

  1. Pick the gift. It should have retail value 2-4x its COGS, complement (not replace) a top SKU, and have at least 60 days of inventory.
  2. Calculate the threshold using the formula. Round to a number ending in 9.
  3. Choose the campaign type. Threshold-unlock for evergreen, mystery or limited-time for spikes, tiered for AOV maximization.
  4. Set up the cart-drawer rendering. Progress bar, unlock animation, gift line item at $0.00.
  5. Email and SMS the campaign to your list. GWP campaigns lift email CTR 30-50% over discount-based campaigns.
  6. Measure for 14 days. AOV (target +15-25%), gift attach rate (target 35-55%), gross margin per order (should hold).
  7. Rotate the gift every 60-90 days. GWP fatigue sets in for repeat customers.

Mistakes that kill the lift

Auto-adding the gift without making it visible. Some apps add the gift behind the scenes, so the shopper doesn’t see the unlock. The behavioral lift comes from seeing the gift land. Always render it as a cart line.

Gift COGS too high. A $20-COGS gift on a $60 AOV doesn’t pay back. Keep gift COGS under 12-15% of threshold value.

Threshold too low. If 60% of orders already cross the threshold, the gift is going out free without any AOV pressure. Raise the threshold.

Threshold too high. If under 15% of orders cross, shoppers stop trying. Lower it.

Stacking with promo codes. A 20%-off code plus a free gift double-dips the margin hit. Either disable codes during GWP, or scope codes to exclude GWP orders.

Forgetting to remove the gift if the cart drops below threshold. Some shoppers add to threshold, get the gift, then remove an item. The gift should re-lock automatically. Apps that don’t handle this leak inventory.

When not to run GWP

  • Catalogs with no plausible “complementary” SKU. Single-product stores have no gift to give that isn’t a unit of the same product (which is just a discount).
  • Luxury brands where free anything cheapens the offer. A free gift with a $4,000 handbag breaks the positioning.
  • B2B / wholesale. Buyers don’t want surprise add-ons; they want their PO to match.
  • Stores with under 60 days of gift inventory runway. Running out is worse than not running the campaign.
  • First 30 days of a new store. You don’t have AOV data yet to set the threshold correctly.

How GWP stacks with the wider funnel

GWP is one tier of a layered rewards strategy. The full stack:

  1. Free shipping at $50 — removes universal friction.
  2. GWP at $100 — adds a tangible item.
  3. 10% off at $150 — compounds the reason to add more.

Stacked, the tiered rewards bar lifts AOV 25-40% over a single-tier free-shipping bar. GWP is the middle layer that converts most efficiently because it adds rather than discounts.

A short summary

Gift With Purchase is the rare promotion that lifts AOV without eroding price perception. The 11 campaign types above each fit a specific catalog and goal — threshold-unlock for evergreen, tiered for AOV maximization, mystery and limited-time for spikes, gift-with-subscription for LTV.

Pick the gift carefully (2-4x retail-to-COGS, complementary not cannibal, 60-day inventory), set the threshold using the formula, render the unlock visibly inside the cart, and measure for 14 days. Most stores see AOV move within the first week.
