How the discount is calculated
Sale price = Original × (1 − Discount% ÷ 100)
Margin remaining = (Sale price − Cost) ÷ Sale price × 100
A discount only works if there's margin left to give. Because your discount comes straight out of profit, a 30% markdown on a 50%-margin product cuts your per-unit profit by more than half. Always check the margin remaining before committing to a promotion.
Frequently asked questions about discounts
How do I calculate a sale price after a percentage discount?
Sale Price = Original Price × (1 − Discount % ÷ 100). For a $50 product at 20% off: $50 × 0.80 = $40. The amount saved is Original Price − Sale Price, or $10 in this example.
How deep a discount can I offer and still make a profit?
Your maximum discount before losing money is capped by your margin. If a product costs you $20 and sells for $50 (60% margin), discounting more than 60% means selling below cost. This calculator shows the margin remaining at any discount so you can find the profitable limit.
Do discounts hurt my brand or margins?
Deep, frequent discounts can train customers to wait for sales and erode both margin and perceived value. Many merchants get better results from value-based offers — free gifts, free shipping thresholds, and bundles — which raise order value instead of cutting price. This tool helps you see the true margin cost of any markdown.
What is a better alternative to slashing prices?
Instead of a straight percentage off, consider a free shipping threshold, a "buy 2 get 1" bundle, or a gift with purchase above a spend level. These protect your per-unit margin while still giving customers a reason to buy more, often lifting average order value rather than shrinking it.
